What is Communities in Schools?

Communities in Schools (CIS) is a grant-funded program that supports students in removing academic and non-academic barriers to learning. Some Jefferson County students deal with poverty, a lack of adult role models, and the absence of basic needs, including food, shelter, and health care. Not having consistency in these areas of their lives impedes their ability to learn, no matter how capable they are.

Communities in Schools Site Facilitators

Our Site Facilitators build relationships that empower students to stay in school and succeed in life. They work inside schools in partnership with school staff to identify challenges students face in class or at home and coordinate with community partners to bring outside resources inside schools. From addressing immediate needs like food or clothing to more complex ones like counseling or emotional support, the model does what it takes to help students succeed.
